SharePoint-Videos publishes a video training set on SharePoint 2013: Business Intelligence. Our training set is led by Jason Himmelstein, a subject matter expert on the topic of business intelligence (BI) solutions for the Microsoft® suite of applications. As Himmelstein explains in his set, “Power BI” is a new set of tools specifically developed for SharePoint Online, Office 365.

Microsoft has published a success story on “Power BI”, titled UK Hospital Sees Cloud-Based BI Service as a Tool to Boost Clinical Outcomes and Efficiency. This content was published on April 17, 2014. The subject is a report about the North Tees and Hartlepool National Health Services Trust of the UK, and their experience with this online BI tool specifically designed for Office 365. Professor Philip Dean, Head of the Department of Pharmacy and Quality Control Laboratory Services is the subject of the report, which was written by the Power BI team.

The highlights:

Power Query

Dr. Dean used the new “Power Query” component of Power BI to identify external data directly relevant to his BI objectives. These objectives, broadly speaking were twofold:

  1. To track internal use of the clinical drugs under study; including usage and cost and
  2. To benchmark the Trust’s experience with these drugs against peers, international experience metrics, etc.

“Power Query” facilitated the collection of external data required to meet pt 2, above. While the inner workings are not detailed in this Case Study, it would appear the tool is leveraging Bing, Microsoft’s online search tool.

Power View

Dr. Dean implemented the “Power View” component of the “Power BI” suite of tools to expand viewing. With this component he successfully displayed 3 graphs on one screen. The success story notes early graphical display methods would have limited him to one graph, only.

Power Map

“Power Map” is a GIS enabled feature. Dr. Dean used this feature to incorporate a regional component to his BI solution. With “Power Map” users can access the solution directly from maps, by region. Presumably, this component is leveraging the same GIS fetures available with SQL Server, 2012.
